Holiday Cards

I’m a total slacker and do not generally send out holiday cards.

I blame it on the fact that about 10 years ago I got all ambitious and bought a stack of cards, and spent about 10 hours writing long sincere messages in each. I sent them out (on time) and about a week later I came home from work to find the whole lot of them sitting in a pile in my mail box with “insufficient postage” stamped all over them. Apparently, square cards need extra postage because the US postal system is a piece of shit (but you all knew that already). It pissed me off
so much that I decided I’d probably never send a Xmas card again.

Last week Richard and I went out and bought a small box of Christmas cards and actually wrote some out and sent them. Hopefully I’ve learned my postage lesson and these cards will actually get to their intended recipients (most of whom live in Australia).

Why am I writing this? Mostly to accomplish a few things:

  1. Serve as a thank you to those friends of mine who have sent us cards. You are sweet and much better people than I am. Know that even though you’ve sent me a card you are likely not getting one in return, at least this year. It doesn’t mean I’m an ingrate. It just means that I’m lame.
  2. Serve as some kind of (really really lame) HAPPY HOLIDAYS message to all of you out there; and:
  3. Serve as an advanced apology to those of you who were expecting a holiday card and have not/will not get one from me this year.

Maybe I’ll be better next year. Maybe. But I’m definitely not making any promises on that one.

i sent christmas cards for a few years in a row, then i moved to DC and just didn't get into the Christmas spirit last year because I was still kind of hating it here. This year I was just too damn busy to be bothered to do so, even though several people sent me a card and I feel like a heel for not sending them one in return. most got a "thanks for your card; that was sweet of you" email.

I'm sending out Christmas cards this year. But I'm cheap and saving up for an Aston Martin, so I went to the drug store and found some old Columbus Day cards in the bargain bin. I decided to write happy little messages in my cards that describe why a man best known for not knowing how to sail (and perhaps less known for trying to destroy whole swaths of indigineous peoples) is wishing you a Happy Christmas.

Happy Holidays my ass. Good Richard! I think less and less people send cards each year. As letter writing goes away (due to that internet thing), sadly so do Christmas cards, Birthday cards, Anniversary cards, Thanksgiving cards... etc.

It does seem to feel like more of a chore each year, which I know is wrong and not the way it should be.

I had to do the last minute rush last night to make the final postal deadline, and as usual, started out trying to think of something meaningful and witty for each one, but by the end was rolling off the standard sentiments like a production line!

Pick a random holiday during a time of year when it's not so already insane (St. Patrick's Day....or Labor Day) and send cards then. They'll be unexpected and therefore more valued. Or just publish a generic "this is your public Christmas Card, love you, thanks" post on your blog. Wait...

At work we had to sign 184 Holiday Cards. I signed "& a Great 2007! - Classy" over and over and over again. I hope their 2007s blow and I regain use of my right hand.

The BF and I feel very special, indeed. His schedule calms down a little beginning next week I think. Drinks again? Or game night at my house? Merry Christmas to you both!!!

It's not that I don't want to send you a card, it's just that I'm too lazy to do it. So instead, I'm commenting on your blog to say Happy Holidays. Lame I know, but only the best for my favorite panda.

Hey Jessica (bea arthur) how can you be so sure Cherry is your favorite panda? I was the other half of that panda team (which should be making a public appearance on New Years Eve) and I'm pretty darn charming... possibly even more charming than Mr. Ride. Ok, maybe not - but you should not make such a quick decision on things like favorite pandas until you meet the rest.
