Vegemite
Last night Richard and I went out to run a few errands and see a movie. We were searching for Vegemite, since Richard brought over two jars (one big, one small) and the large one broke open in his suitcase. We're already through half of the little jar so to assure we didn't run out (because the craving for a cheese, tomato and vegemite sandwich can and has struck at any time) we thought it best to find a Chicago source. That source turned out to be Cost Plus World Market on Broadway.
The irony of all this being that, until my last visit to Sydney in January, no force on the planet could get me to voluntarily eat Vegemite. But I have to say, that stuff is a party in your mouth.
Stopped into Borders and bought a novel finally released in the US called "Who Moved My Blackberry?" that I will crack open tonight. A friend in the UK recommended it to me in February and I'm glad it has finally come over. The jacket says it is a cross between "The Office" and "Bridget Jones" but my friend said it also reminded her of Matthew Beaumont's "E" - so I figure this should be a homerun (PS - If you've ever worked in an advertising/marketing/design/PR firm and have not read "E" do yourself a favor and buy it). Richard bought Augusten Burrough's new "Possible Side Effects" (which he will be reading and signing this Friday night).
After that we saw "Friends With Money" which was one of the best movies I've seen so far this year, although I will say hometown girl Joan Cusack needs to put back on a little weight. And while I love Jennifer Aniston, I don't think she's really capable of playing anything other than variations on Rachel. Last night her character was "Living-in-LA-and-having-a-bad-year" Rachel.

PS - I've replaced your link with this one.....
Ok...Augusten Burroughs is reading in town on Friday? When? Where?
Vegemite is TOTALLY party in your mouth. I had my first taste on a dare in a pub crawl in Sydney. I thought I'd hate it, but DAMN! The keys are in the amount of Vegemite you use on your toast, the amount of butter you mix into it, and the manner with which you spread it.
I feel like before I can enter into the world of Vegemite, I'll need a play by play on the proper sandwich building process. At your convenience, please expand further.
9 years in OZ and this Yankee still can only eat it when added to an Egg McMuffin. And since I'm on an anti-Macca's kick, basically I don't eat the stuff.
Sorry - Promite's where it's at for me now - I've even got my mother sending me bottles of the stuff to London. And while I'm waiting for my promite to arrive, I still (L) Marmite better than vegemite.
Who would have thought that a simple, malty-yeasty-high-in-Vitamin-B substance would create such a response! And as Prashant said..its all about the ratios! Its a personal preference kinda-thang!
Imagine trying to clean a LARGE jar which was kindly broken by American Airlines off your sneakers and Havaianas. Not so easy.
mmm...all this talk of the Vegi-so-mite is drawing me to the kitchen..
LOL, I read E, several years ago, and loved it, lent it to a friend that was looking for a fun book to read over a weekend, and I am still waiting for it to be returned !!

bWill - I'm disappointed. I can't believe the aussies broke your resistance to vegemite - after 6 years of resistance, I'm still holding out. I don't mind the stuff that much - but the side effect on the breath of your s.o. after they've had a mouthful is not good news. Funky stuff.
